Sailing around Madeira provided a different perspective on the beauty of this island. Departing from Funchal, we set sail along the southern coast, with cliffs towering over the deep blue Atlantic. The sense of freedom was exhilarating as the wind guided us past hidden coves and dramatic waterfalls that seemed to cascade directly into the ocean.
We anchored near Cabo Girão, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Viewing it from the sea was spectacular, as the sheer cliff face stood imposingly against the skyline. Here, we dove into the crystal-clear waters for a swim, surrounded by schools of colorful fish that thrive in the rich marine ecosystem.
The journey continued towards Porto Santo, Madeira’s lesser-known sister island. The contrast was striking, with long sandy beaches replacing the rugged cliffs of Madeira. Porto Santo’s laid-back vibe was instantly relaxing, and the therapeutic sands are said to have health benefits, making a beach day here a rejuvenating experience.
Each evening, as we returned to the yacht, the sunset painted the sky with hues of orange and pink. Nights at sea were peaceful, with the gentle rocking of the waves and a sky full of stars. It provided a perfect time for reflection and appreciation of nature’s beauty.
Sailing around Madeira was not just a journey over water but an exploration of tranquility and natural splendor. It offered a unique way to experience the island’s diverse landscapes and seascapes, leaving me with lasting impressions of its maritime charm.
