Navigating Public Transportation on Madeira

Getting to and from the airport

The only bus service serving Funchal Madeira airport (FNC) is Aerobus.  They offer a fairly frequent service, although with fewer buses on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday. The cost is 6€, regardless of how far you travel. It will call at or near most popular hotels in the Funchal area, and the journey time is 30-50 minutes, depending on traffic and which part of Funchal you are travelling to (or from.)

Tip: Always have some euro coins with you

If you did not already know, the euro is the currency of the island. Not all buses, taxis or even shops take cards, so it is best to always have some cash with you. Coins are best, but a 5€ note may be acceptable, or even 10€ for longer routes.

Other bus services

The bus system changed on July 1, 2024. Previously, independent bus companies operated different routes. Now, “SIGA” operates routes across the island.

How much is the fare?

Trips within Funchal cost 1€95. Trips further out cost between 2€60 and 7€, depending on how far you travel. Note that these are one-way fares. Discounts are available for children.

Are the buses reliable?

I found that within Funchal, the buses are reliable. This includes the Aerobus, although be sure to leave plenty of time if taking a flight. Outside Funchal, I found the buses to be quite challenging. It was not always clear where to wait for your bus and which direction the bus was going in. My advice is, if unsure, walk to the nearest town’s bus stop or bus station, and take the bus from there. Buses also did not seem to always run to schedule. Journey times are considerably higher than driving – for example, to go from Ribiera Brava to Funchal too me around 1.5 hours, when driving would have been around 30 minutes.

OK, so I’ve decided I don’t want to take the bus – what are my alternatives?

There are a few other options if you don’t fancy taking the buses on the island. Firstly, taxis are relatively inexpensive. You can normally find some outside popular hotels and resorts, and there is also a rank at the following city centre locations:

Bolt does also work on the island. Simply download the app and enter promo code HOWARDCTC for a welcome gift.

You could also consider renting a car. Compare prices here.

Additionally, Funchal is very walkable, however; you should be aware that some routes may involve steep hills. Get paid for walking – download WinWalk here.
