My recent trip to explore Madeira was nothing short of magical. Immediately after I landed, the lush landscapes and vibrant culture of the island promised an unforgettable journey. SInce I arrived in Funchal, the charming capital, where cobbled streets and colorful markets beckoned. I indulged in the local cuisine, with espetada and bolo do caco becoming fast favorites. Levadas – a network of trails
Exploring the levadas of Madeira was a highlight since these irrigation channels offer a network of trails. In brief, they provide access to some of the island’s most secluded and stunning parts. One memorable trek was the Levada do Rei, where the sound of running water and the scent of eucalyptus created a serene atmosphere. The views of the verdant valleys and majestic mountains were breathtaking, offering endless photo opportunities.

Short excursions
I also had the chance to visit Monte, a picturesque parish above Funchal. Here, the traditional toboggan ride—a wicker sled guided by two runners—was an exhilarating experience. Gliding down the hill with panoramic views of the town below was exhilarating. Meanwhile, The Monte Palace Tropical Garden nearby was another gem, showcasing a diverse collection of exotic plants and historical tiles. You can either turn up at the bottom of the cable car in Funchal (close to the old town) and buy your own ticket or do a tour with the cable car ticket included like this one
Drives
The coastal drives around Madeira were equally captivating. So, I rented a car to drive along the dramatic cliffs, discovering secluded beaches and quaint villages. Porto Moniz, with its natural volcanic pools, was particularly impressive. These pools, filled by the ocean waves, offered a unique swimming experience surrounded by rugged rock formations.
As my trip concluded, I felt a deep connection to Madeira. The warmth of the people, combined with the island’s natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere, made this visit truly special. I left with a treasure trove of memories and a promise to myself to return and uncover more of Madeira’s enchanting mysteries.
